USB-support in VirtualBox

5 10 2009

When you install VirtualBox for the first time you wont have permission to forward USB to the guest OS. This is because VB doesnt have the right permissions for the operation, therefore you have to do the following:

Edit fstab:

$ sudo nano /etc/fstab

Go all the way down and write i.e # VirtualBox USB, and beneath input the following line:

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=123,devmode=664 0 0

Where you substitute devgid=123 with the group ID VitualBox has. What group its a member of you can fint under System -> Administration -> Users and Groups.

Click unlock, type password and scroll down to see what group VB is a part of.

Restart everything to be sure, start up your guest OS, rightclick on the USB-icon on the bottom right corner of VB’s main window. Now all you have to to is click on the USB-unit to mount and there you go.

Remember, you can just use one USB-unit at one operative system at a time
